Carl and Frances Smith home, Fayetteville, ca. 1926. The Smiths, along with their daughter Ada Lee, lived at 514 Gunter Street. Carl Smith graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1922 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked on many area construction projects, including the Veteran's Hospital in Fayetteville, Lake Wedington, and Devils Den. Smith later served as Fayetteville's city engineer and also as water superintendent. He was a veteran of World War II and a colonel in the Arkansas National Guard.

Carl Smith designed their home, which was built in 1925-1926 for approximately $5,000. According to Ada Lee, "Our house was very modern, and Home Economics students from the University of Arkansas came and toured it on occasion."
