Railroad engineer Charles Gaston Vance (left) and fireman Joe Irby paused from their work to have this picture made sometime between 1910 and 1920. Both men lived in Fayetteville and worked on the St. Paul branch of the Frisco railroad.

Irby later moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where he continued to work as a railroad fireman. Vance worked for the Frisco Railroad for 53 years, and was one of Fayetteville’s last surviving Civil War veterans when he died in 1933.
