Show Me the Money: Ozark Economics

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will learn to distinguish between needs and wants, and about how needs and wants change over time.
2. Students will learn about various forms of economic exchange such as trading, bartering, and marketing.
3. Students will develop an understanding of money as a symbol.
STRATEGIES
1. Students will discuss the needs and wants of early Arkansans and compare them to their own needs and wants.
2. Students will hear a story about the Latta family’s movement to and settlement in the Ozark Mountains.
3. Students will play a matching game about the Ozark pioneer trades.
4. Students will play a game in which they barter for their basic needs.
5. Students will look at money from the past and compare it to money today.
