Osage Indians, Homesteaders, and You!

GRADES K - 5

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will learn about life in the Ozarks for Osage Indians who hunted here until the 1800s.

2. Students will learn about life in the Ozarks for the homesteading families who began to come here in the 1800s.

3. Students will compare these lifestyles to each other and to their own.

STRATEGIES

1. Students will study artifacts and secondary sources to learn about the lifestyles of the Osage Indians who were in Northwest Arkansas until the 1800s.

2. Students will study artifacts, primary, and secondary sources to learn about the lifestyles of the homesteaders who began to arrive in the Ozarks around 1800.

3. Students will discuss their own lifestyles.

4. Students will do an activity sheet that compares and contrasts these lifestyles.
