The Geometry of Quilts

GRADES K - 5

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will learn about quilt making as a local art form.

2. Students will learn about the geometric principles behind creating a quilt pattern.

3. Students will explore the basic art elements that go into designing quilts.

4. Students will be able to identify basic quilt patterns.

STRATEGIES

1. Students will look at basic quilt patterns.

2. Students will hear primary and secondary sources that explain the use of particular quilt patterns.

3. Students will play a game where they must identify the basic shapes that compose quilt patterns.

4. Students will design their own quilt patterns using basic geometric principles and art elements.
