The Civil War in Northwest Arkansas

GRADES 3 - 8

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will learn about the similarities and differences between the Ozarks and the rest of Arkansas during the Civil War.

2. Students will be able to sequence the major Civil War events of Northwest Arkansas.

3. Students will learn about the ways the Civil War affected life in Northwest Arkansas.

STRATEGIES

1. Students will explore primary and secondary sources from two Washington County leaders who attended Arkansas 1861 Secession Convention.

2. Students will examine a timeline of major Civil War events in Northwest Arkansas.

3. Students will look at artifacts that illustrate the daily life of a soldier.

4. Students will explore a primary source that describes civilian life in Northwest Arkansas during the Civil War.

5. Students will learn about the changes reconstruction brought to Northwest Arkansas.
