This
quilt top was made in the early 1930s for L.O. & Glo Vanzant,
teachers in the west Washington County community of Morrow. It
was donated to the Shiloh Museum by the Vanzants' daughter, Donna
Charlesworth.
From
School Days, School Days . . . The History of Education
in Washington County:
Glo
Vanzant and her husband Oral taught school (Glo, 5th grade; Oral,
8th grade) at Morrow when it was a new school, about 1931 until
it closed in midterm two or three years later because of lack of
funds. Glo recalls that there was a nice red brick building on
the hill. She was always a little afraid to walk on the swinging
bridge which they had to cross to get to the school. There were
lovely people in the community who backed up the teachers in any
way, she said. A weekly event at the school while the Vanzants
were there was a visit by a minister, Sam Marrs from Cane Hill,
who gave a sermonette and led the students in singing.
