This beautiful Rose Wreath quilt made by Lena Smith of Fayetteville about 1928. The photo shows Lena holding her niece Ada Lee Smith. Ada Lee was the daughter of William Carl and Ada Slaughter Smith. Carl Smith and Lena Smith were siblings. Lena never married, and spent her working years as a nurse in Springfield, Missouri. She died in 1972.
To see this and other fine quilts from the Shiloh Museum collection, stop in and see our newest exhibit, Twentieth Century Quilts, which opens April 9. The exhibit showcases over 20 quilts with colors and designs that made quilts of the 1900s distinctly different from those of the 1800s. Trends in art and home décor sparked a renewed interest in quilting in the early 1900s, and quilters took the craft in new directions, designing innovative patterns and using fabrics in bright pastel colors. This trend continued until the 1970s when a new wave of quilters looked back again to earlier traditions which resulted in yet another surge of interest in quilting that continues today. Twentieth Century Quilts will be on exhibit through October 27.
