Hem Weights

Hem weights were often sewn into the hem of a woman's dress prior to baptism to keep her dress from floating up in a revealing manner. These ca. 1900 weights were donated by Ruby Lindsay, who discovered them in an old suitcase she bought at an auction in Winslow, Arkansas.

Speaking of Winslow and baptisms, this photo from our collection relates to both topics.

The baptism is taking place in Slicker Pool near Winslow, ca. 1913. According to historian Robert Winn, who grew up in Winslow and donated the photo, “The occasion presumably is a Methodist baptizing, judging by the large number of people of that denomination in attendance.”
